This 600 watt high pressure sodium lamp is the heaviest of the range: 90,000 lumen initially, 2000 kelvin, an E40 cap and a nominal life of 24,000 hours.

HPS beside LED, honestly

The 600 watt HPS was the standard a whole generation of growers worked to for years, and it is still sold. At the same time LED has moved ahead on nearly every technical point. It is fair to say where that leads, even though we sell both.

LED wins on efficiency and on heat. A modern LED gets roughly two to three times as much usable light from the same watt, and whatever does not become light comes out as heat. Six hundred watts of HPS is therefore also six hundred watts of heating in your room, which is a problem in summer and loads your extraction harder. An LED of the same output draws less power and so gives off less heat.

Where HPS still has something to say is replacement. A lamp and a ballast together make a far simpler installation than an LED fixture of comparable output, and when the lamp is spent you replace only the tube. For anyone with a working installation, carrying on with HPS is often wiser than tearing everything out at once. And in a cold room in winter that heat is not waste but warmth you would otherwise have had to supply.

The honest summary: building new, LED is the better choice. Already running HPS, and this lamp is a simple way to keep going until replacement genuinely pays.

Frequently asked questions

Should I switch to LED?
Building new, LED is more efficient and cooler. With an HPS installation already running, carrying on is often wiser.

How much heat does 600 watts of HPS give off?
Essentially the full wattage ends up as heat in your room. Size your extraction for it.

Why does the lumen figure look so high beside an LED?
Because lumens follow the human eye, where sodium light scores well. It says little about what your plant receives.

Is the heat always a drawback?
No. In a cold room in winter it replaces heating you would otherwise have had to provide.
