Rope length is your adjustment range

On a pulley hanger everyone looks at the load rating and almost nobody at the rope length. Yet that is what decides how far you can raise and lower once everything hangs.

A hundred and fifty centimetres sounds generous, but half is taken up in the loop. A pulley runs doubled: the rope goes down and back up, so every centimetre gained costs two of rope. From 150 centimetres you keep roughly 70 centimetres of real adjustment, just enough to follow a lamp from seedling to harvest height in a two metre tent.

So hang the hooks as high on the frame as you can and let the hanger do the lowering, rather than hanging them low and giving away half your range. Do not leave spare rope swinging loose; tie it up, because a loop that gets into the ratchet jams solid.

Can the rope slip?
