A grow light does not break, it fades

With most equipment in your tent the end is obvious: a pump seizes, a fan starts howling, a meter reads nonsense. LED lighting works differently. Diodes rarely burn out. They give slightly less light year after year, and because your eyes adapt just as slowly as the lamp declines, nobody sees it happen.

What you do notice are the consequences. The plants at the edges fall behind, flowering feels like it drags, yield slips without your having changed anything. The blame then lands on the nutrients or on a disappointing variety, while the culprit is the lamp that is still burning away perfectly.

Two things help. Note the date when you hang it and the hours you run per day, so you know later how old your light really is. And keep the lamp cool and clean, because heat is what accelerates that decline: a fixture with room around it and a dust-free heat sink simply holds its output longer. Replacing a lamp because it is old feels illogical while it still works, which is precisely when it pays.
