Here the model number actually means something

With most brands the figure after the model name is marketing. A lamp called 1000 draws a hundred watts, a 2000 draws two hundred, and the number climbs faster than the power does. With Lumatek the 3.1 in the name is not invented: it is this range's stated efficiency, 3.1 micromoles per joule.

That is precisely the number lamps ought to be compared on. Micromoles per joule tells you how much usable light comes back for every joule you put in, and it is the only figure that sets two lamps of different brands and different wattages fairly beside each other. Watts tell you what you pay, µmol/s tells you how much light you get, and µmol/J tells you how well the lamp connects the two.

Two cautions with it. A manufacturer who puts the number in the name wants you to look at it, which is fair enough here because 3.1 is high. But always check whether it describes the complete fixture rather than a single diode, because that difference is large and common in this trade.
