IP65 in a room where water belongs

A grow room is a humid environment with electricity in it, and that is exactly the combination a protection rating addresses. IP65 is two digits, each saying something different.

The 6 concerns solid particles and is the top step: dust tight. No dust enters the housing, not even after months. That counts double here, because dust on a heatsink or among the electronics traps heat.

The 5 concerns water and means resistant to a jet from any direction. That is more than splashes, and enough for what happens in a grow room: condensation dropping off the fabric, a mishap with the watering can, or misting the crop under the lamp.

What it does not mean is immersion. IP65 covers a jet, not a bath; the lamp must not lie in water or be cleaned under it.

In practice this mostly buys peace of mind while working. You can water and mist under a running lamp without switching off first, and you can wipe the fixture with a damp cloth. Dust on the top belongs to that: it is the side that sheds the heat, and it is worth wiping while you are there.
