The shape of the field, not just its area

Most grow lights are rated for a square: 60 × 60, 80 × 80, 100 × 100 cm. This one is not. It is built for 120 × 60 cm, which is the same area as 85 × 85 but a very different space.

That is useful because grow spaces are often not square. A 120 × 60 cm tent is a common size, and so is an alcove, a cupboard or a strip along a wall. Put a lamp designed for a square in there and part of the light lands on the wall instead of the crop, and that part is lost: it never reaches a leaf, and it has been paid for.

It works the same way round. This lamp in a square 100 × 100 cm tent leaves two strips underlit at left and right while the middle gets more than it needs.

So measure your floor area before choosing, and mind the proportion rather than only the square metres. In a long space this fixture also lets you extend lengthways: several in a row on the daisy chain give an even strip, which is harder with square lamps.

The fixture itself is 85 cm long and only 3.8 cm thick, which helps where height is short.
