What a coverage figure does and does not promise

This lamp is quoted at a coverage of up to about 120 × 120 cm. Such a figure is useful for matching a lamp to a tent, but it promises something less precise than it appears to, and that is worth knowing before you rely on it.

A lamp's light is never evenly spread. Directly below the centre it is strongest, and it falls away towards the edges. A coverage area is the surface within which the manufacturer considers there to be enough light, and where exactly that line falls is a choice rather than a constant of nature.

Height counts too. Hang the lamp higher and the lit patch grows while intensity drops everywhere; hang it lower and you get a smaller, brighter area. So a single coverage figure always belongs to a single hanging height.

The practical way to use it is this. Take the coverage as an upper bound rather than a promise: in a 120 × 120 cm tent this lamp works, but the corners get less than the centre. If you want an even field across that full size, two smaller lamps side by side beat one large one in the middle, which is exactly what the daisy chain is for.

The fixture's shape helps here: at 100 × 100 cm it is square, which spreads light over a square tent more evenly than a compact lamp of the same power.
