The XS1000 and the P1000 both draw 100 watts. That is exactly why it pays to know where the difference does sit, because on your electricity bill you cannot tell them apart.

It is in the diodes. The XS range uses Samsung LM301B chips, a known and measured type whose output is established. The P range uses unbranded diodes, and that is precisely why Viparspectra publishes no dependable efficiency for that range while quoting a figure for the XS: 291.29 µmol/s at 100 watts, or roughly 2.9 µmol/J.

What that means in your tent: for identical running costs you get more usable light, and you can check what you are buying rather than having to trust it. For anyone with one tent who will keep it for years, that is the whole story. On a tight budget, or for a second tent where the light matters less, the P range does the job too.

Why does the XS carry an output figure and the P not?
Because the XS uses measured diodes from a known brand and Viparspectra quote a checkable number for it. For the P range they do not.

Will I notice the difference against a P1000?
In light output yes, in consumption no. Both lamps draw 100 watts.

Is the LM301B still a current diode?
Newer types exist, but the LM301B is a proven chip whose performance is well documented.

What tent size is this lamp for?
Small to medium spaces up to around 60 × 60 cm. For 120 × 60 cm the XS2000 is the right size.
