µmol per joule: the number that lets you compare lamps

A grow light carries three kinds of number, and only one of them lets you put two lamps side by side fairly.

Watts tell you how much electricity the lamp uses, not how much light comes out. Two 150 watt lamps can differ widely in output.

PPF, here 329.6 µmol/s, is how many photons the lamp emits per second in the range plants can use. That is the output, but it says nothing about what you pay in electricity for it.

µmol/J divides the two: photons per joule, or how much light you get per unit of electricity. This lamp sits at 2.199. That figure is the efficiency, and it is the only number independent of the lamp's size.

Why it matters: a lamp running around the clock costs roughly a few hundred kilowatt hours per cycle for every hundred watts. At equal output, a tenth of a point in µmol/J shows up directly there. A lamp reaching 2.8 gives about a quarter more photons for the same consumption than one reaching 2.2.

So compare on µmol/J to know what is efficient, and on PPF to know whether the lamp is large enough for your space. Both are on this page.
