When wireless is worth it

A cable is cheaper, never fails through interference and needs no power of its own. Wireless earns its keep once a cable genuinely gets in the way, which is more often than you would think:

• A controller in another room. Running cables through a wall or around a door frame is untidy and often not allowed in rented property.
• Equipment at a distance, such as an extraction fan in a loft while your controller hangs downstairs.
• A tent you move regularly, where you would rather not unplug cables each time.
• A walkway where a cable across the floor is a trip hazard.

It is a one-to-one link: one transmitter at your controller, one receiver at your device. Several devices need several sets, which is often the point where cables become better value again.

What happens if the link drops

This is the question to ask of any wireless solution, because a cable does not drop. The link runs on 2.4 GHz, the same band as your Wi-Fi and your microwave, so interference is a real scenario in a busy house.

So apply the same rule of thumb that governs a switchable socket: do not put equipment behind a wireless link if its failure causes immediate damage. Your extraction in a hot room is better on a cable. Circulation fans and lighting are considerably less critical.
