The combined care set: cleaners for both the pH and the EC probe, the EC cleaning tool, a brush, three pots, and sachets of pH 7.0, pH 4.0, KCl and EC 2.77.

Which of the three sets you need

Bluelab makes three care sets, and the choice simply follows what you measure.

  • Only a pH meter? The pH set is enough. It holds the cleaner, the brush, buffer at 7.0 and 4.0 and KCl storage solution.
  • Only an EC meter? The EC set covers it: cleaner, the cleaning tool and reference solution at 2.77.
  • Both, or a combi meter? Then this set is the sensible choice. You get both cleaners, both references and the storage solution in one box.

Note that the two probes need different maintenance, which is exactly why this set contains more than the other two appear to justify between them.

A pH electrode is a consumable with a limited life. It has to be stored wet, it drifts, and it needs calibrating regularly. Without maintenance it will not last the season.

An EC sensor lasts years and barely drifts. Its only enemy is fouling, which needs a cleaner and a small tool to reach the electrodes. Calibration is often not even required; testing is enough.

In practice that means the pH side wants a monthly round, while the EC side mainly wants a clean when your readings start to drift.

Frequently asked questions

Is this better value than the two sets separately?
If you have both probes, yes. If you measure only one value, the separate set means buying only what you use.

Does it suit meters from other brands?
The solutions do, provided your meter calibrates against the same values. Note that many non-Bluelab EC meters ask for 1413 rather than 2.77.

In what order do I work?
Clean, hydrate, calibrate, store. Calibrating before cleaning sets your meter up against a fouled probe.

How often?
The pH side monthly. The EC side when readings drift, and otherwise a few times a year.
