A wooden hole punch with an iron tip, sized precisely to the Blumat Digital Tensiometer and the Tropf-Blumat Maxi.

The Blumat hole punch makes a correctly sized hole in advance so the ceramic cone goes in without force. In firm or heavily rooted soil that matters a great deal: without a pilot hole you push the cone through roots, which is bad for the plant and risky for the ceramic.

Placing it properly, and why that makes the reading

A tensiometer measures the substrate's suction through contact between the ceramic cone and the soil around it. Poor contact means you are measuring an air pocket rather than your medium, and then the gauge gives you values worth nothing.

Three points that make the difference:

• Do not punch too close to the stem. The thickest roots are there, and you do not want to damage them.
• Fill the hole with a little loose soil before seating the cone. That improves contact between ceramic and the rest of the soil considerably.
• Press the substrate firmly around it once the cone is in place, so no gap is left.
