When you need this one

A calibration is most accurate near its calibration point. If you routinely measure far above EC 1.4, calibrating with 1413 sets your meter against a value that has nothing to do with your working range.

Situations where 12,880 is the right choice:

  • Wide-range meters: instruments reading to 20 mS/cm are often calibrated at this value.
  • Combi meters needing a separate reference for the EC side; kits often contain both 1413 and 12880.
  • Concentrated stock solutions that you mix and dilute later.
  • Runoff from a substrate with accumulated salts, which can read far above your feed value.
  • Brackish or hard well water where your source value already sits high.

If you grow in the usual range of EC 0.8 to 2.6, 1413 µS/cm is the right choice and you do not need this.

Which do I need, 1413 or 12880?
Check your meter's manual and your working range. Measuring around EC 1 to 3, use 1413. Higher than that, or if your meter asks for it specifically, use 12880.

Can I dilute it down to 1413?
No. A buffer's value is fixed; once you dilute it you no longer know what you are calibrating against.

Do I need both?
Only if your meter calibrates at two points, or if you work in both ranges.
