A 20 ml sachet of buffer solution at a precisely known pH of 7.01. This is the point every calibration starts from.

A pH meter does not know what it is measuring on its own. It converts a voltage into a number, and that conversion drifts as the glass membrane ages. Calibrating means showing the meter a liquid whose value is fixed, so it can correct itself.

Why 7.01 comes first

Of all buffers, 7.01 is the most important, because it is your meter's zero point: where the electrode ideally produces exactly zero millivolts. If that is off, your entire scale is wrong no matter what else you calibrate against.

So the order is always the same: 7.01 first, then your second point. A meter that only calibrates at one point almost always does it at 7.01, for exactly this reason.

Wait for the reading to settle. That takes longer than you expect (ten to thirty seconds is normal) and adjusting too early is the most common calibration mistake.

Technical Specifications:

  • Value: pH 7.01
  • Volume: 20 ml
  • Use: first calibration point (zero point) on any pH meter
  • Handling: single use; do not pour back into the packet

Frequently asked questions

Is 7.01 alone enough?
On a single-point meter, yes. If your meter handles two points, use 4.01 as well. That corrects the slope of the scale as well as the zero point.

Why 7.01 and not exactly 7.00?
That is this buffer's standardised value at reference temperature. Your meter recognises it as 7.01.

Can I reuse the solution?
No. Your tip always carries something with it, contaminating whatever is left.
