Why your lamps do not belong on an ordinary plug-in timer

This is the reason relay boxes exist, and it is a safety story.

A grow lamp is not an ordinary load. At the moment of switching on it briefly draws a multiple of its normal current, and that is inrush current. On a lamp with a ballast it is a peak lasting a fraction of a second, but it is a substantial one.

A cheap plug-in timer from a DIY store is not built for it. What happens next is predictable and dangerous:

• The contacts burn. Every switching event arcs slightly, and that eats away at the contact material.
• The contacts can weld together. Your timer then stops switching off and your lamps stay on, in the middle of what should have been your dark period.
• The timer gets hot. At worst that is a fire risk.

A relay box solves it by handing the switching to a relay built for the job. Your timer or controller only drives the relay; the heavy work happens inside the box.

This version combines that with climate control: alongside the two 600 watt lamp contacts it drives a fan up to 3 amps, and there is a separate 16 amp heater contact. The temperature range runs from 5 to 55 °C.

Do I still need a separate timer?
For your lamps' day and night cycle, yes, unless you choose a version with a built-in timer. The relay box takes over the switching, not the timekeeping.

Can I put two 600 watt lamps on it?

Why is the heater contact separate?
Because a heater is a very different load from a lamp. That is why it has its own heavier contact.
