Why a transformer is quieter

To make a fan turn more slowly, less power has to reach it. How that is done decides how much noise your motor makes, and the differences are large.

Cheap electronic controllers chop pieces out of the mains waveform. The motor no longer receives a smooth sine wave but a chopped signal, and you hear it: the familiar hum, most noticeable at low speeds. It also makes the motor warmer, because some of the power ends up as heat rather than movement.

A transformer works differently. The copper coil lowers the voltage itself, leaving the shape of the waveform intact. The motor simply receives a lower, clean AC voltage. The result is a smoothly turning fan with no hum, including at low settings.

What you pay for it is weight and money. A copper coil is heavy and expensive, which is exactly why a transformer controller costs more than a simple stepped one. In a grow room inside a house, where your extraction runs around the clock and you would rather not hear it, that is usually worth the money.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1.5 A enough for my fan?
For a smaller box, usually. Check the rating plate and leave headroom for startup current. If you are above it, take the 2.5 A version.

Why is it so heavy?
The copper coil. That weight is the reason it controls quietly.

Will I really hear no hum?
A transformer is considerably calmer than a chopping controller. To rule out any hum at all, a frequency controller is the next step.

Can it run at a fixed speed?
It controls automatically on temperature. For a purely manual fixed setting, look at a simple speed controller.
