Why a syringe is more accurate than a jug

Below about 20 ml a measuring jug is the wrong tool, for three reasons that all apply at once.

Height per millilitre. In a jug a small amount spreads across a wide base and forms a thin film that barely reaches the first marking. In the narrow barrel of a syringe the same amount stands as a clearly readable column.

What stays behind. Pour 5 ml out of a jug and some of it remains as a film on the wall. At 500 ml that is negligible. At 5 ml it can easily be a tenth of your dose. A syringe you push empty, and what went in comes out.

Transfer without spillage. You draw from the bottle and inject into the water. There is no intermediate step where something can run down a lip.

This 5 ml size is meant for highly concentrated products, where a dose of a few millilitres per reservoir is normal and being 1 ml out already tells.

Frequently asked questions

Can I dose pH down with it?
Yes, and it is ideal for that. Rinse the syringe with clean water straight after use: acids and highly concentrated products attack the rubber seal over time.

How long does a syringe last?
With proper rinsing, a long time. The plunger stiffens once nutrient has dried inside, and that is the point to replace it.

Which size do I need?
Choose the smallest syringe your dose fits in. For 3 ml this is the one; for 40 ml take the 60 ml.
