Potassium chloride solution for storing your pH electrode. Not a buffer: this is what keeps your probe alive.

The glass membrane of a pH electrode only measures while hydrated. Storing it dry is by far the most common way a perfectly good meter becomes useless: when you find it again it responds sluggishly, and sometimes it is beyond saving.

Storage solution is not buffer solution

These two get confused constantly, and it is an expensive mistake.

Buffer solution has a precisely known pH and exists to adjust your meter. You use it briefly and throw it away.

Storage solution is what the electrode sits in between measurements. Its value does not matter; what counts is the high ion concentration. That keeps the membrane in the state it should be in.

Which is exactly why water is a poor alternative. Tap water will do at a pinch, deionised water certainly will not: pure water is ion-poor and therefore pulls ions out of the membrane. You slowly rinse away the thing that makes measuring possible. Rinsing with clean water is fine; storing in it is not.

In an emergency, pH 4.01 buffer is a better stopgap than water, but KCl is what the membrane was designed for.

For pH electrodes only. A conductivity probe has no membrane to dry out and can be put away dry, provided it is rinsed.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need?
A few drops in your electrode's protective cap is enough. Check now and then that it is still there.

My probe has been left dry: is it lost?
Not always. Standing it in KCl storage solution for a few hours brings a lot back. Recalibrate afterwards and see whether it can be brought onto value again.

Can I use it for my EC probe?
No need. That has no membrane to dry out; rinsing and dry storage is enough.

How long does a bottle last?
A long time. You only use a few drops at a time.
