A 1 litre measuring jug with a handle, graduated in 10 ml steps. The size for mixing nutrient.

The order you mix in matters

On a multi-part feed schedule, order is not a detail. Get it wrong and you see flocs in your reservoir and measure an EC lower than you dosed, because part of your feed has precipitated and is no longer available.

The rule behind every schedule is the same: concentrates must never meet each other undiluted. Each product goes into the water separately, and the water does the diluting.

A workable order:

  1. Start with your reservoir filled with water, not an empty tank you pour everything into.
  2. Add one component at a time and stir until fully dissolved before the next goes in.
  3. Keep calcium away from sulphate and phosphate. That is the combination that precipitates most often. If your schedule has a separate calcium component, give it space between the rest.
  4. Only measure EC once everything has dissolved and the solution has been stirred through.
  5. Set pH last. Adding nutrient shifts pH, so doing it the other way round means doing it twice.

This 1 litre jug is big enough to measure a component and pre-dilute it with water before it goes into the reservoir, which reduces the chance of a reaction further.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to pre-dilute?
Not always, but it helps. Pre-diluting makes the chance of two concentrates meeting undiluted close to zero.

There are flocs in my solution.
That is almost always a precipitate from two components added too closely together. Work more slowly and stir in between.

Can I use this jug for draining off?
Yes, but then keep a separate jug for mixing nutrient.
