Converting to a large reservoir

Feed schedules are almost always written in millilitres per litre. On a small reservoir you work that out in your head. At 200 or 300 litres it is where most arithmetic errors happen, and an error at that scale hits your whole crop at once.

The sum itself is simple: dose per litre times the number of litres in your system. If the schedule says 2 ml per litre and you have 250 litres, that is 500 ml. Two things go wrong in practice.

Your tank volume is not your system volume. On a recirculating system there is also water in the pipework and in the pots. The stated system volume is the figure to calculate with, not what fits in the reservoir.

You top up, so your reservoir is rarely full. Calculate on what is actually in it when you dose, not on maximum capacity.

Note this jug's graduation: 50 ml per division. That is coarse, and deliberately so. This jug exists to measure and transfer large quantities, not to dose additives. For anything under 250 ml reach for a smaller jug, and for precision work the 250 ml with its 5 ml divisions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I measure 20 ml with it?
Not reliably. The first division is at 50 ml. For small amounts use the 50 ml or 250 ml jug.

Why is the graduation so coarse?
Because the jug is wide. At 170 mm across, 10 ml produces almost no height difference, and a finer scale would be false precision.

Is it practical to pour with?
For transferring into a reservoir, yes. Full it weighs three kilos, so the handle is not a luxury.
