Why you need a small jug alongside a big one

Doing everything with one large measuring jug sounds thrifty. In practice it does not work, and the reason is printed on the jug itself: the graduation.

A 3 litre jug is marked in 50 ml steps. If you need to measure 15 ml of an additive, that amount does not even reach the first line. You estimate, and with a concentrated product that estimate is the difference between effective and harmful.

On top of that, a large jug is wide. The same 15 ml spread across a broad base forms a thin film that barely reaches a marking, while in a narrow jug it stands at a clearly readable height. The narrower the jug, the greater the height difference per millilitre, and the more accurately you read.

This 50 ml jug is graduated in 5 ml steps and is 40 mm across. That lets you read small amounts properly: against a line, not by feel.

A practical rule: choose the smallest jug your dose still fits comfortably in. For 15 ml that is this one, not the 3 litre.

Can I measure acid or pH down in it?
Polypropylene resists most common growing products. Rinse straight after use, and preferably keep a separate jug for aggressive products.

Is it dishwasher safe?
Yes. It is also autoclavable to 121 °C, which goes further than any dishwasher.

Will it break if dropped?
Polypropylene is unbreakable in normal use. That is exactly why you choose it over glass on a wet bench.
