A 42-centimetre stick that switches itself on the moment it touches water, never needs calibrating, and floats if you drop it.

The Milwaukee EC40 reads out through a row of blue LEDs across four scales: CF, EC, ppm 500 and ppm 700. Automatic temperature compensation between 5 and 50 °C, IP67 waterproof, and a settable alarm value that makes the reading flash once you cross it.

Built for the grow room, not the lab

This meter is designed around one question: what actually goes wrong with an instrument used every day?

You forget to switch it off. Solved by having it switch on when it gets wet and off again twenty seconds after a stable reading. There is no button to forget.

You forget to calibrate. Solved by setting it at the factory and leaving it there. A conductivity sensor measures between two fixed electrodes, and nothing about that ages. Unlike a pH probe, where the glass membrane genuinely does drift.

You drop it in the reservoir. Solved by positive buoyancy. It does not sink to the bottom among the roots, it floats until you fish it out. Combined with IP67 that means no damage and no search.

Your batteries die at the wrong moment. Solved by frugality. Three AA batteries give roughly three years at ten measurements a day.

The 42-centimetre length belongs in the same list: you reach into a deep reservoir without putting your hand in the solution.

What you give up is fineness. An LED bar is a scale, not a screen, so you read a band rather than an exact figure. To steer to 0.01, a pocket meter with a display suits you better. To know where you stand twenty times a day, this is faster than anything.

Frequently asked questions

Does it really never need calibrating?
Correct, and it does not need to. If you want reassurance, check it against a solution of known value; adjusting is not possible.

How precisely can I read LEDs?
You read a scale step. If two LEDs light, you are between them. For steering in tenths that is fine; for hundredths it is not.

What is the alarm value for?
To set a limit you do not want to cross. Go above it and the reading flashes. Useful when several people measure and not everyone knows your targets by heart.

Does it measure pH?
No, conductivity only. For acidity you need a separate meter.

Does it genuinely float?
Yes, that is a design choice. It will not sink away among your roots.
