The Milwaukee pH51 reads 0.0 to 14.0 pH to an accuracy of 0.1, calibrates manually at two points, and has an IP65-rated housing. The electrode is separately replaceable, as are the batteries: the modular design makes that a matter of seconds.

What IP65 means, and why it matters here

A meter in a grow room has a harder life than most people assume. Not through one accident, but through the conditions themselves: high humidity, condensation, splashes while mixing feed, wet hands, and salts that get everywhere.

An IP rating states exactly what a housing withstands. The first digit covers solids, the second water. At IP65, the 6 means fully dust-tight and the 5 means protected against water jets from any direction.

That is not the same as submersion. For a meter you hold in a reservoir, it is exactly right: the tip is meant to get wet, the housing is not. But the difference from an unrated meter is large: there, moisture creeps in through the seams, settles on the electronics, and produces a meter that gradually works less well and eventually stops, without anything visibly going wrong.

Which is why moisture kills more meters than drops do. You notice a drop. You do not notice moisture getting in, until it is too late.

Frequently asked questions

Can it survive being dropped in the reservoir?
IP65 covers splashes and jets, not submersion. Fish it out quickly, dry it off and it usually survives, but do not count on that as a design feature.

What is a double junction?
A second reference bridge inside the electrode, protecting the reference solution against contamination from what you are measuring. In salt-heavy nutrient solution that makes the electrode last noticeably longer.

Can I replace the electrode myself?
Yes, that is the point of the modular design. Unscrew the old one, screw on the new one, then recalibrate.

Why does this get 1500 hours when another meter gets 300?
Differences in display type and electronics. For you it means you will rarely think about batteries.
