Dosing by the drop

Adjusting pH means working with amounts too small to measure. You add something, stir, measure, and repeat until you reach your target. The question is what "a few drops" actually amounts to.

On this pipette that is fixed: one drop is 56 microlitres, and there are 18 drops to a millilitre. That turns adjustment into something you can repeat.

What that gives you:

• You can write your correction down. "Twelve drops of pH down on 20 litres" is usable information; "a splash" is not.
• You can get it right first time next time. With the same reservoir and the same water, the correction is often comparable.
• You overshoot less. Working from a cap or a splash, you regularly go too far and have to correct back, which raises EC for no reason.

With a diluted pH down, expect roughly half a millilitre to one and a half per 10 litres, depending on how hard your water is. Always measure afterwards, because water hardness determines how much is needed and it varies a great deal by region.

Is the drop size always the same?
With the same liquid, held upright, yes. Thicker liquids give larger drops, so treat 56 microlitres as a guide figure.

Can I use it to take a sample?
Yes, and that is one of its handiest uses: transferring a clean sample into a pot without contaminating what you are measuring.

Can I reuse it?
For the same product, yes. When you switch products, take a fresh one.
