Buying acid by the five litre, and what that means in practice

Most pH reducers in this range stop at one litre. This one goes to five, and that is a different kind of purchase. A grower with one tent and a thirty litre bucket will get years out of half a litre. Once you are working with reservoirs of several hundred litres on hard mains water, acid stops being a bottle in the cupboard and becomes a consumable.

Account for the weight. Bio G Power give a net weight of 666 grams for the half litre, 1273 grams for the litre and 6328 grams for the five litre. So the five litre weighs over six kilos net, and that is not something you tip one-handed over an open reservoir while holding a pH meter in the other hand.

The opener gets the can open without fumbling and without spillage, the tap lets you dose without lifting. On a product that causes severe burns that is not a luxury but the way you handle it safely. Set the can on a low, solid surface and draw off into a measuring jug rather than straight over your reservoir.

59% phosphoric acid, and why that is a familiar strength

This bottle is the same active substance at the same concentration as the bloom version from the better-known brands: 59% phosphoric acid. That is no coincidence, it is the standard trade strength for this application. You are not buying a different chemical here, you are buying the same chemistry in a larger container.

What you need to know about that chemistry appears on the page of every phosphoric acid product, but it weighs more here because the consumption is higher. Phosphoric acid splits in your reservoir into hydrogen ions, which lower the pH, and phosphate ions, which stay. In flowering that phosphate is welcome; it is the same P you get from your base feed and your PK booster. But anyone heavily acidifying a large reservoir of hard water is also dosing an amount of phosphate that counts in the schedule. Keep an eye on your EC and treat your phosphate as a single total across all its sources.

Dosing and measuring

Bio G Power keep it deliberately simple: add as needed, stir well and always measure the pH. The recommended value they give runs from 5.5 to 6.3. Add in very small steps, for instance half a millilitre per ten litres of water, stir the reservoir right through and only then measure. Repeat until you reach your target.

Always do this after your nutrients are mixed and your EC is right. The feed shifts the pH by itself, so acidifying clean water and adding nutrients afterwards gives you a value that no longer holds.

Safety at these quantities

This is a corrosive product that causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and it may be corrosive to metals. Wear gloves and safety glasses, do not breathe the vapour and keep it in its original container. Store upright, above five degrees, out of reach of children. On skin contact, immediately remove all contaminated clothing and rinse the skin with plenty of water. Dispose of contents and container in accordance with national regulations.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from a big-brand pH-?
At the same strength, chemically not at all: 59% phosphoric acid is 59% phosphoric acid. The difference is in the pack sizes and in what you pay per litre.

Can I use it during vegetative growth?
It works, but you would be adding phosphate while the plant mainly wants nitrogen. Bio G Power position this product for flowering plants.

Why a tap on the five litre?
Because tipping six kilos of corrosive liquid over a reservoir is how people end up wearing acid. Draw off into a measuring jug with the can low and stable.

How much do I need per reservoir?
That depends entirely on the hardness of your water and your nutrient concentration. There is no fixed dose, only measuring and approaching in small steps.

Is it safe for a drip system?
Yes, provided it is fully dissolved and stirred through the reservoir. Never add undiluted acid to a line or to a concentrated fertiliser.
