A single-bottle mineral base nutrient for growing in soil, covering growth and bloom alike. 5 ml per litre of water, that is 1 to 200, at every watering.

Overfeeding is visible here

This is the most useful thing Hy-pro write about this product and it appears on almost no shop page, including those of other brands.

Give too much and a light brown discolouration of the leaves appears. And the remedy they give alongside it is just as simple: give extra water, which flushes the excess out of the medium.

That is worth more than it looks. With most base nutrients you get a dosage figure and nothing else, and you are left working out for yourself whether what you are seeing is a shortage or an excess. The two also resemble each other: both give discolouring leaves, and the reflex is usually to give more. Here you know which way to go, and that the correction is water rather than nutrient.

Note the nuance: this is a light brown discolouration, not leaves yellowing from the bottom up. That last one is a different picture and points the other way.

One bottle, the whole cycle

Hy-pro Terra is a one-component feed: there is no separate growth and bloom version and nothing to measure out side by side. You give the same 5 ml per litre from the start of growth to the end of flowering, at every watering.

The thinking behind it is that all the elements are already in there and the plant takes what it needs at that moment, rather than you steering the ratio by phase. That makes it a bottle for anyone who wants to keep things simple.

Potting compost usually only holds nutrition for the first few weeks, so after that the bottle does the work. If you reuse your soil, top it up with extra lime or a cal-mag, because that is what a second round runs short of first.

Let your water come up to temperature first

A tip from Hy-pro that costs nothing and saves swings: let the water come up to working temperature before you mix the nutrient through it.

Cold water from the tap behaves differently once it warms up in your grow space. Mix into cold water and your pH and EC shift afterwards anyway, which means you measured something other than what your plant finally receives.

Check your EC with your soil in mind. If you grow on pre-fertilised potting compost, keep the EC at the low end: that soil contributes for the first few weeks itself. Measure your pH last, once the nutrient is in, and bring it down into the usual range if needed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell if I am giving too much?
By a light brown discolouration of the leaves. Give extra water to flush the excess out of the medium.

Do I need a separate flowering nutrient?
No. This is a one-component feed for growth and bloom alike, at the same dose throughout the cycle.

How much per litre?
5 ml, that is 1 to 200, at every watering.

Why should my water come up to temperature first?
Because cold water warms up in your grow space and your pH and EC shift afterwards anyway. Then you measured something other than what your plant gets.

I am using my soil for a second time.
Top it up with extra lime or a cal-mag. That is what a second round of soil runs short of first.
