A 1 litre bottle of 59 percent phosphoric acid, the large pack of the flowering-phase pH reducer. Identical in content to the 500 ml bottle: same concentration, same method, simply twice as much of it.

A litre of concentrated acid lasts a long time

At 59 percent you work in millilitres, even with a hundred litres standing in your tank. A litre is therefore not a year's supply but a supply across several grows, and that changes the question: the question is not whether you will finish it, but how you store it in the meantime.

The answer is on the label and it is stricter than for a bottle of nutrient. Strictly in its original packaging, capped, cool and dark, and not below 5 degrees. Do not decant it into an empty bottle of something else: with a corrosive product, a label that does not match its contents is the start of an accident. An unheated shed that freezes in January is not a good spot.

Correcting without overshooting

Always work in the same order. Fill your tank, add your nutrient, stir thoroughly, and only then correct pH, because the nutrient shifts the value a good way by itself. Measure, add a small amount, stir again and measure again.

That sounds laborious and it is the fastest route. A splash at this strength pushes the value straight past target, and then you are lifting it back with pH+. You are left with two acid-base corrections in the same tank and an EC that has an opinion about it. The band you are aiming for is 5.5 to 6.3, and it shifts with your substrate.

Safety

A corrosive product. Work in gloves and safety glasses, keep your face out of the vapour, and always pour acid into water. The full hazard and precautionary statements are printed on the bottle, which is the second reason to leave it in its own packaging.

Frequently asked questions

How does this differ from the 500 ml bottle?
Only in volume. Same acid, same 59 percent concentration, same advised values.

How long does it keep?
A concentrated inorganic acid does not spoil the way an organic product does, provided you keep it closed and at temperature. The storage conditions on the label matter more here than a date.

Can I decant some into a smaller bottle to keep by the tank?
Please do not. The label carries the safety information for the liquid, and that only works as long as the two stay together.

Can the bottle live in an unheated space?
Only if it never drops below 5 degrees. Cool and dark is good, freezing is not.
