Why you have to hit egg-laying with thrips

Thrips is difficult because most of the population is never on the leaf where you are spraying. The eggs sit inside the leaf tissue, the pupae sit in the soil. What you see and hit is a fraction of what is there.

A product that only kills adult thrips therefore keeps resetting you to zero while the supply continues regardless. Velgro works from two directions: adults are rendered sterile within hours of contact, which stops egg-laying, and larvae are hit through the gut at the stage when they are on the leaf.

Spray the room, not just the plant

Because pupae sit in the soil and larvae hide, the guidance for this product is to treat not only the crop but the soil and the surrounding structures. That is a materially different spraying pass from aphid work, where you simply coat the leaf.

The interval is built around it too: under active pressure, repeat after 3 days and then once more after 10. That second repeat catches the individuals that were still pupae in the soil at the time of the first treatment.

They avoid the plant afterwards

Treated plants carry a scent and taste that people cannot detect but which thrips actively avoid. That keeps working after treatment as a deterrent, which matters most in a space where new individuals keep arriving.

Spray a few minutes before the lamps go off, so the product is not sitting on wet leaf under full light.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have to spray the soil as well? Because thrips pupate in the substrate. Treat only the leaf and the next wave simply comes back up.

Why two repeats on different timings? The one after 3 days catches what has just hatched, the one after 10 days catches those that were still pupae in the soil.

Will I smell anything? People cannot detect it. Thrips can, and that is where the deterrent effect comes from.
