This pot is lower than the 9.4 litre

That sounds wrong and it is correct. The 9.4 litre stands 30 centimetres tall and 20 wide; this 14 litre is exactly the other way round, 20 tall and 30 wide. It holds half as much again and still sits ten centimetres lower.

It is worth pausing on, because most people pick a larger pot assuming it is also taller. Under a lamp at a fixed height that difference is close to free: you get four and a half litres more substrate and your plant starts ten centimetres lower, so you keep more room to grow it into.

What a wide footprint buys you

At 30 centimetres across this pot covers roughly 700 square centimetres of floor. Fourteen fit on a square metre touching, nine if you want to walk between them.

The width works inside the pot as well. Roots spread across a larger area instead of following a narrow column downwards, which suits the way most annual crops root anyway. A low, wide pot also stands more securely under a plant that becomes top-heavy, and at this volume that is a real consideration.

Watering shows the third advantage: a wide surface takes water up more evenly. In a narrow, tall pot a dose quickly runs down as a column and leaves the edge dry. Here you spread it across a 30 centimetre disc and it reaches the whole ball.

Air pruning at the wall

The cones face outwards, each with a hole in its point. A root tip arriving there dries back and stops, and the plant makes new side roots behind it. The top two rows of cones are solid so no substrate washes over the rim when you water.

Why is the larger pot lower? Because the volume here is in the width rather than the height. Fourteen litres in a 30 centimetre disc is lower than 9.4 litres in a 20 centimetre column.

How many fit a 100 by 100 cm tent? Nine with room between them, fourteen packed together.

Will a plant tray fit under it? You need one of at least 30 by 30 centimetres. The 29 centimetre square tray is just too tight.
