The base stands on feet, and here that matters most

Every Airmaxx has a base with a foot under it, so air passes beneath the pot and water leaves unimpeded. On the small sizes that is a welcome extra. At fifty litres it is the difference between a working pot and a swamp.

The reason is simple: the more substrate standing above the base, the more water pressing down on it. Sit the bottom flat on paving or a solid floor and that water cannot get out, leaving a saturated layer at the bottom that never dries. No oxygen reaches that layer, and that is exactly where root rot starts.

So make sure the foot really is clear. On a grid, on a ribbed tray, or on two battens. Not on a flat sheet, and not in a tray where the run-off stands, because the substrate draws it straight back up.

What fifty litres is for

This is a size for a few plants grown large: a mother plant that has to last for years, a shrub or small tree in a container, or outdoor growing without going into open ground. At 40 centimetres across one pot covers over 1,250 square centimetres, so a 100 by 100 centimetre tent takes two to four in practice, and then your floor is full.

Fill it where it is going to stand. Fifty litres of damp substrate weighs tens of kilos and the perforated wall is not meant to serve as a handle.

Air pruning at the wall

The cones face outwards with a hole in the point, where the root tip meets air and stops growing on. In a pot this size that counts double: fifty litres without air pruning gives you a dense collar of roots against the wall and a core that is barely used. The top two rows of cones are solid and keep the substrate on board when you water.

Frequently asked questions

How much substrate will I need? A 50 litre bag per pot, and a little more if you mix in perlite or clay pebbles.

Can it stand in a tray of water? No. The foot has to stay clear, or the substrate draws the run-off back up and the bottom stays wet.

Will it fit an 80 by 80 cm tent? One fits comfortably. Two fit only if you never need to reach past them.

Can I leave it outdoors? Yes, as long as it never stands in a puddle. Put it on paving with the foot clear, or on a base.
