What 144 litres of containment is really for

At this size it is no longer about drainage water. The run-off from nine 18 litre pots might be ten to fifteen litres per watering, and you do not need a hundred and forty-four litre tray for that.

What it is for: the moment something goes wrong.

A hundred litre reservoir that splits or overflows. A hose clamp letting go while the pump runs. A float valve that sticks. A jerrycan that topples. In each case tens of litres are released in a short time, and the difference between a floor with a tray under it and one without is the difference between mopping up and an insurance claim.

Do the sum for your own setup: add up the water standing in your room, in the reservoir and in the lines, and see whether it stays inside a hundred and forty-four litres. If you are above that, the tray is a buffer rather than a solution, and a floor drain or a second tray is worth considering.

Why this costs more than the rigid tray of the same size

That is a fair question, because the rigid 120 centimetre plant tray is deeper and holds nearly thirty litres more.

What the extra buys is the fold. A waterproof 1.20 metre tray that folds flat without leaking along the fold line is a harder thing to make than the same tray in one piece. And it delivers something the rigid one cannot: a 120 centimetre sheet goes through no interior door and will not go into a tent that is already standing.

If your tray is going in one place and never has to pass through anything, the rigid version is the logical choice. If it has to get in somewhere, or has to be storable, this is the only one that manages it.
