The ridges in the base

Look into the tray and you see a pattern of shallow ridges running across the base. That is not stiffening but a function, and it is the detail separating this from a smooth tub.

A pot with drainage holes standing flat on a smooth base seals itself. The water in the bottom centimetres of the substrate cannot get out, because there is no space beneath the holes. You then get exactly the saturated bottom layer where root rot starts, even though the pot is standing in a tray that is otherwise dry.

The ridges hold the pot a few millimetres clear. That is enough: water leaves the holes, runs along the ridges to the lowest point, and the bottom of the root ball stays in contact with air.

In practice it means you can stand pots straight in it without laying battens or a grid underneath, which a smooth tray does need.

What a hundred by a hundred fits

This size is matched to standard greenhouse staging and to 100 by 100 centimetre grow tents. With a tent, note the difference from the folding version: a rigid hundred centimetre tray will not go into a tent that is already standing, because it would have to pass the poles. So put it down before you build the tent around it, or choose the Flextray.

At 120 litres it contains a substantial volume if something leaks, and it is deep enough to serve as a watering tray: fill it with a layer of water and the pots drink for themselves.

Do I need to put anything under the pots? No. That is what the ridges are for.

Will it fit a 100 by 100 cm tent? Only if you put it down before the tent goes up. Otherwise the Flextray 100 is the right choice.

Can I flood it to water from below? Yes, ideally with a capillary mat on the base. Do not leave pots standing in water for days.
