Watering by flooding the tray

This tray does more than catch. Fill it with a layer of water and the pots standing on it drink for themselves, all at once, without you taking a watering can to each one. That is why a tray of this depth turns up in greenhouses and on staging.

It works best with a capillary mat on the base. A mat is a fibre cloth that holds water and spreads it evenly. Without one your pots stand in a puddle that dries at the edges before the middle; with one, every spot is equally moist and the cloth keeps a buffer after the standing water is gone.

The method in short: lay the mat on the base, set the pots on it so they make contact, and pour water into the tray until the mat is saturated. Let the pots draw it up and pour the surplus away after half an hour, or keep the mat merely damp and top it up in small amounts.

What not to do is leave pots in standing water for days. The substrate then stays saturated at the bottom, no air reaches the roots, and water that has run through is more concentrated than what you gave.

What else it does

As an inner tray in an 80 by 80 centimetre tent, as a catch tray under a growing system, or as a large drip tray under a group of pots. At 76.8 litres it will also contain a substantial leak.

The base carries shallow ridges that hold the pots slightly clear, so drainage water can run out from under a pot instead of standing beneath it.
