The base is where fabric pots fail

Not the wall and not the weave. The base, and usually the seam joining the base to the wall.

The reason is easy to see once you work out the weight. Thirty litres of damp substrate weighs about twenty-five kilos, plus the plant. All of that rests on the bottom fifteen centimetres of the pot, and the moment you lift it or drag it across the floor, it hangs from a single seam.

A square base adds something: the corners. A round seam spreads the pull evenly, a square one concentrates it at four points. That is why Garden Highpro reinforces the base of this range separately, and why the handles sit in the side seam rather than in the top edge.

In practice: lift from both handles at once rather than one, and do not drag it filled across a rough floor. Better to put it in place before filling, so the base only has to carry the weight and not move it as well.

Taller than it is wide

With a 30 centimetre footprint and a 33 centimetre height this pot stands up rather than spreading out. The whole Propot range is set up that way: the 50 litre is 33 by 33 by 46 centimetres, more pronounced still. You gain floor space, and you get a clearer gradient from moist at the bottom to airier at the top.

Roots at a porous wall

The geotextile passes air. A root tip meeting the wall dries back and stops; the plant branches behind it and so uses the whole volume rather than forming a collar around the edge.
