How much should a tray actually hold

There is a rule of thumb for this you rarely see written down: reckon on around twenty percent of the pot's volume. That is the run-off you normally get when you water until something appears at the bottom, and it is exactly the amount you need for accumulated salts to leave with it.

For a 7 litre pot that is a good litre and a half. At 20 by 20 centimetres with a 3 centimetre rim, this tray holds about 1.2 litres. That covers a normal watering and overflows on a heavy flush, which is worth knowing before you stand watering over a wooden floor.

An interesting detail when choosing: the deep 17.4 centimetre tray holds almost exactly the same. Four centimetres of depth on a smaller square comes to the same 1.2 litres as three centimetres on a larger one. The difference is not capacity but shape.

When to take the flat one

This tray is the better choice if you lift the pot often, because a low rim does not get in the way. It is also easier to empty and wipe out than a deep one.

Go for the deep 17.4 centimetre tray if you flush heavily, or if the tray does not get emptied every time. A higher rim gives you margin.

Either way the same rule holds: do not leave the pot standing in what it has collected. Water that has run through is more concentrated than what you gave, and the substrate simply draws it back up.
