An 11 litre fabric pot, 22 x 22 x 23 centimetres, with handles and the Aqua Breathe layer. For a lot of growers eleven litres is the standard final pot: big enough to carry a plant through flowering without another move, small enough to stand nine of them on a square metre.

How much water goes in per watering

With a fabric pot the question is not only how much you give but how often. Eleven litres of substrate saturated holds a few litres of water, and part of that is not available to the plant because it is held too tightly in the medium.

The rule of thumb that works: give about twenty percent of the pot volume per watering, so around two litres, and stop when a little runs out of the bottom. That small amount of run-off carries accumulated salts with it. Give a lot less and those salts build up low in the pot. Give a lot more and you flush away feed the plant never touched.

What makes fabric different here from plastic is that between waterings it lets air in from every side. You can therefore water closer to the dry side without starving the roots of oxygen. That is exactly what makes it more forgiving of one watering too many than a closed pot of the same volume.

Why no water stands at the bottom

A plastic pot has holes in its base and always holds a saturated layer beneath them that has nowhere to go. In a fabric pot the whole base is open, so that layer never forms. Stand it on feet, a grid, or a ribbed tray so the base is genuinely clear.

The Aqua Breathe layer

The geotextile sewn into the sides keeps water inside until it reaches the base. You see the difference on your floor: no damp patch around the pot, and the outside of the fabric stays clean for longer.

Frequently asked questions

How many fit on a square metre? Nine sit comfortably with air between them. Sixteen only works if you push them together and water from above.

Do I water more often than an 11 litre plastic pot? Usually yes, because the wall evaporates too. How much more depends on your temperature and humidity, so go by the weight of the pot rather than a schedule.

Can I run drippers into it? Yes, and it is a good combination. Spread the water over two or three drip points, because a single point makes a wet column and leaves the rest dry.

Will feed stain the pot? Salt marks appear on the fabric over time. Rinsing after harvest takes most of it out, and it has no effect on how the pot works.
