A breathing wall cools the root ball

Water evaporating from the outside of a fabric pot takes heat with it. It is the same effect as a wet cloth around a bottle: the contents stay cooler than their surroundings. On a pot these dimensions there is roughly 2,400 square centimetres of side wall available to do that work.

Under powerful lighting in a tent this is not theory. Substrate that gets too warm loses dissolved oxygen, and warm wet roots are exactly the conditions root diseases prefer. A plastic pot in the same room climbs to the temperature of the air around it and sometimes past it, especially where light falls on it.

The reverse holds too, and that is the honest half of the story: in a cold room the same evaporation works against you. If your tent stands in a garage or shed that drops sharply overnight, put the pots on something insulating rather than straight onto concrete.

What the Aqua Breathe layer changes here

The extra geotextile layer in the side walls holds water back so it drains through the base rather than the flanks. You therefore lose less moisture sideways than with single-layer fabric, which makes the evaporation manageable instead of unchecked. You get the cooling without the pot standing bone dry within half a day.

Fifteen litres in the space

With a footprint of 24.5 by 24.5 centimetres you can put four on half a square metre, or nine on a little over half if you push them together. The 25 centimetre height counts towards your lamp distance: the plant starts a quarter of a metre off the floor.

Frequently asked questions

How much cooler does the substrate really stay? That depends entirely on your humidity and air movement, so a figure here would be worth nothing. The effect is largest in dry air with a fan running.

Is 15 litres enough for a large plant? For a plant with a long growth phase this is a good final size. Beyond that, 19 or 25 litres is the next step.

Can I use it outdoors? Yes, and in full sun the cooling effect is at its strongest. Expect to water daily in those conditions.

Why are the pots above 25 litres no taller? From that size on, the height in this range stays at 30 centimetres and only the footprint grows. Wider rather than deeper keeps the ball rootable and your lamp distance unchanged.
