A 4 litre fabric pot, 15 x 15 x 18 centimetres, with the Aqua Breathe layer. This is the size you buy when you work with many plants at once rather than a few large ones, and the first size where pots per square metre matters more than the volume of any single pot.
Arithmetic with floor space
A square base of 15 by 15 centimetres covers 225 square centimetres. On a floor of 100 by 100 centimetres, 36 fit in theory, but then they touch and you cannot reach anything. In practice you place sixteen to twenty-five and keep room to water and to harvest.
Compare that with the same floor filled with 11 litre pots, which takes nine. This size puts two to three times as many plants on the same area, and that is the whole idea behind Sea of Green: your yield comes from many small plants carrying one main top instead of from a few bushes.
The square footprint helps here. Round pots leave a gap between every four that you cannot use. Square pots meet.
What four litres means for how long you can run
Four litres of substrate carries a plant you keep short in growth and then flower. If you want to let a plant grow on for weeks, this is the wrong size: it will empty the pot so fast that you are watering twice a day. Choose 8 or 11 litres for that, or move to a system that tops up on its own.
The Aqua Breathe layer
The sides carry an extra layer of geotextile that keeps water from passing through the wall, so surplus water leaves at the base. With sixteen or more pots on one tray that makes a visible difference to how clean your floor stays, and it means the water you give actually ends up in the substrate.
No handles
Four litres is the largest size in the range without handles. At these numbers that is no obstacle, since you generally move them by the trayful rather than one at a time.

Frequently asked questions
How many fit a 120 by 120 cm tent? Sixteen per square metre touching, so twenty-four to thirty-six on 120 by 120 centimetres. Leave yourself a path to the back row.
Can a plant run a full cycle in this? With a short growth phase, yes. Grow the plant on for longer and you will hit the watering limit before you hit the root space limit.
Does this size work on a capillary mat? It does. Because water moves through the base, the fabric makes good contact with the mat and the pot draws on its own.
Should I space them apart? A few centimetres of air between pots helps against mould low in the canopy. Packing them tight only works well if you water from above.
