Ten litres on a wall

The gap between 173 grams and a filled pot is not one to underestimate. Ten litres of damp substrate quickly weighs eight to twelve kilos, and that load hangs off whatever fixing you choose. For this size that means masonry, concrete or wood, or otherwise a frame using the supplied tie wraps. Plasterboard with an ordinary plug is not an option here.

Spread the load where you can. A pot hung from several points rather than one puts far less through each screw, and the top edge of the fabric does not pull in a single spot.

Watering from the top down

With a single wall pot you simply water at the top. As soon as you hang two or three above one another it becomes a system, and then where the water goes once it leaves the bottom starts to matter.

Two approaches work. Offset the pots, so each gets its own water and the run-through lands on the floor in a tray you slide underneath. Or hang them deliberately in line and use the run-through from above as the first watering for the pot below. The second saves water and asks for attention, because the bottom pot receives everything the top one let through, salts included.

What not to do either way is give a lot at once. At ten litres a large pour runs through the fabric before the substrate has taken it up.

The Aqua Breathe layer

The less permeable layer in the wall steers water to the bottom rather than through the face. At this volume that is the difference between a wall that stays dry and a wall with half a metre of wet stripe beneath it.

What fits in it

Ten litres is enough for a full plant rather than just herbs: a trailing tomato, a solid clump of strawberries, or an ornamental you want to spill over the edge. It is also the size that holds up best outdoors, because the substrate buffer is large enough to survive a hot day.

How heavy does it get when filled? Reckon on eight to twelve kilos with damp substrate and a plant in it. Choose your fixing for that, not for the empty weight.

Can I hang it from a fence or a rack? Yes, that is what the tie wraps are for, and at this size it is often the wiser choice.

Can the bottom pot take the water from the one above? It can, but watch what comes out of the bottom one. Water that has run through is more concentrated than what you poured in.
