Everything on a wall dries faster

A pot on the floor rests its base against something and has one side that barely sees air. A wall pot hangs free: front, bottom and both sides all sit in moving air, and only the back is against the wall. With breathable geotextile that difference counts twice over, because every exposed square centimetre evaporates.

On top of that, air higher in a room is usually warmer and drier than air just above the floor. Hang a row of wall pots at eye level in a room with a fan running and they are sitting in the driest part of it.

In practice that means checking daily rather than every few days, and outdoors in summer sometimes twice a day. It is why herbs and strawberries work well in this size and moisture-loving plants do not. If you want to tame it, choose a substrate that holds water, with coco pith or a little extra compost, rather than an airy mix full of perlite.

The shape

Gronest gives two figures for this size, 25 and 33.5 centimetres. It is a flat, broad pouch rather than a deep pot, which matches what usually goes in it: herbs, strawberries and small flowering plants root shallow and wide. For anything with a taproot this is the wrong shape.

The Aqua Breathe layer

The layer in the wall passes less than the outer fabric, so water leaves at the bottom instead of through the face. On a wall that is why the front of the fabric stays clean and dry, even after a season.

Building a green wall

Hang several pots side by side on one line, then a second row above, offset slightly so water from the upper row does not fall straight into the lower one. Set the bottom row high enough off the floor to slide a tray underneath.
