A 22 litre fabric pot from the Boxer line, 29 centimetres wide and 36 tall, with handles. In a range where almost everything is wider than it is tall, this is the exception.

The one size that genuinely goes deep

Line the sizes up and something stands out. The 12 litre is 25.5 wide and 21.5 tall. The 16 is 28 by 26. The 30 is 35 by 30, the 39 is 40 by 30 and the 56 is 43 by 38. All wider than tall.

This 22 litre is 29 wide and 36 tall, the only one clearly the other way round. It is six centimetres taller than the 30 litre, which holds eight litres more.

That is not a curiosity but a choice you can use. Short on floor and long on headroom, and this pot gives you twenty-two litres of substrate on a footprint under 30 centimetres. Nine fit on a square metre with room between them, where the 30 litre would give you six.

There is a price, paid in behaviour. A taller pot has a stronger moisture gradient top to bottom, because the saturated layer at the base stays the same thickness while more substrate stands above it. The bottom stays wet longer and the top dries faster. That suits plants rooting downwards and suits young material using only the top ten centimetres rather less.

Roots catch in the weave

Root Pouch does not prune with air. Root tips become caught in the fabric rather than growing through it; the plant branches behind that point and the roots stay inside the pot. On a taller pot that is a welcome property, because the ball holds together at the bottom too when you lift it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this taller than the 30 litre? Because the 30 litre carries its volume in width and this one in height. Thirty-six centimetres against thirty.

Will it tip over? It is narrower and taller than the rest, so more top-heavy. With a large plant a tray with a rim or a support is sensible.

Which plants suit this shape? Anything rooting downwards, and any situation where floor space is your constraint.

How much water per watering? Four to five litres, spread across the surface so it does not sink as a single column.
