Moving a plant without disturbing the root ball

At forty-five litres you are usually no longer running one crop but keeping a plant: a shrub, a young tree, a perennial, a mother plant. And sooner or later it has to go somewhere else.

That is what this line was built for. Because the roots catch in the fabric rather than growing through it, the ball sits inside the pot instead of outside it. Lift it and the whole thing comes: no roots to cut because they left the wall, no ball falling apart the moment it comes free, and no weeks of standstill afterwards while the plant recovers.

Root Pouch names this itself as the reason the Boxer line is used in tree nurseries, where whole trees are raised and transplanted in these pots. On a smaller scale the same principle applies to anything you put out in spring and bring back in come autumn.

In practice: lift from both handles at once rather than one, and lift from the knees. Forty-five litres of damp substrate plus a plant weighs tens of kilos.

Taller than it is wide

At 38 centimetres wide and 40 tall this pot stands up rather than spreading out. You gain floor space over a low pot of the same volume, and you get a clearer gradient from moist at the bottom to airier at the top. For a deep-rooting plant that is exactly right.

The fabric

Boxer weighs 250 grams per square metre, is one hundred percent recycled PET and deliberately non-degradable. The seams are sewn with an industrial lockstitch and finished, and the handles run into that seam.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lift it filled? From both handles and over a short distance, yes. Beyond a few metres a sack truck or a second pair of hands is wiser.

Can I plant this pot into open ground? Yes, and that is one of its purposes. It does not break down, so you can lift it out again later.

What is the difference from the 39 litre? Six litres more in a pot that is narrower and ten centimetres taller. The 39 is wide and low, this one is narrow and deep.

How much substrate does it take? Close to a whole 50 litre bag per pot.
