The space you lose with round pots

A circle never quite fills a square, and with round pots that is not theory but arithmetic that reaches your floor.

This pot is 29 centimetres across. An imaginary square around it measures 29 by 29 centimetres, or 841 square centimetres. The pot itself covers 660. The difference, a good twenty-one percent, is the space between the curve and the corners.

Push four of these together and a gap opens in the middle, a few centimetres across, too small to use for anything else and too large to ignore. Across a square metre that adds up to roughly a fifth of your area.

That is not a reason to avoid a round pot. It is a reason to know when it matters: in a full tent where every centimetre counts, square is more efficient; on a bench, in a greenhouse or outdoors where pots stand apart anyway, it barely registers.

There is something on the other side. Without corners the substrate has no place that stays dry while the rest is moist, which makes the moisture gradient in a round pot more even.

Twelve holes in the base

The base carries twelve drainage holes spread across it rather than a single hole in the middle. That is more than cosmetic: with one central hole all the surplus water has to travel sideways to that point, which keeps the edge of the base wet. Twelve distributed holes let water leave where it stands.

They only work if there is space underneath. Stand the pot on ribs, a grid or battens, and do not leave it sitting in what has drained out.
