Where a perforated pot earns the most

Not standing on a saucer, but inside a system where the pot sits in water.

Put a solid pot in an ebb and flood table and water has to enter through the base holes. That works, but slowly, and the substrate fills from below in a narrow column. In a perforated pot water also enters through the side wall, across the whole height that is submerged, and spreads far more evenly through the ball.

The same applies in reverse. When the table drains, water leaves the pot as fast as it arrived, instead of sitting above a saturated bottom layer. That makes shorter, more frequently repeated flood cycles possible, which is exactly the regime such a system depends on.

It helps in a pot-in-pot setup or on a capillary mat too: the side wall makes contact with the moisture rather than only the rim of the base.

There is a cost you should know about. A perforated pot dries out faster outside a system, because evaporation happens through the side as well. Standing on its own in a warm room, that means watering more often than the solid version.

What the holes are not

Not air pruning. The wall is mostly solid, so roots arriving between two holes turn and start circling after all. What you get is better aeration and drainage, not the effect of a fabric pot or a coned one.

Can it go in an ebb and flood system? Yes, and that is where it works best. Keep the flood cycles short and repeat them more often.

Will substrate escape into the system water? Not with a coarse substrate. With fine coco or soil it will, and then you are fouling your reservoir. Choose coarser, or use a liner.

What is different from the solid 11 litre? Two millimetres of height and the perforations. Otherwise the same pot.

Do I water more often? Outside a system, yes, because there is evaporation through the side.
