What the step from 11 to 18 litres costs you

More substrate always sounds good, but on a fixed floor area you pay for it in plant numbers. That sum is worth doing before you choose.

The 11 litre stands on 24 by 24 centimetres, so 576 square centimetres. This 18 litre stands on 30.5 by 30.5, which is 930. You get 64 percent more substrate and give up 61 percent more floor: almost exactly an even trade.

In practice, on a square metre: sixteen 11 litre pots touching, or nine of these. Sixteen times eleven is 176 litres of substrate, nine times eighteen is 162. The smaller pot even wins slightly on total volume.

So why the larger one? Because it is not litres per square metre that matter but litres per plant. Nine plants with eighteen litres each can grow larger than sixteen with eleven. You take this size when you want fewer, bigger plants, and the small one when you want more, smaller ones.

The second reason is water. Eighteen litres holds a bigger buffer, so a missed watering matters less and you have to come by less often.

The dimensions read 30.5 centimetres in all three directions, but this is not a cube: like the rest of the range the pot narrows towards the base. The 30.5 is the measurement at the top. That is why the 29 centimetre square plant tray does fit under it, even though the pot looks wider.
