What UV stabilisation actually means

Most growing pots say nothing about their material, and that is usually fine because they live indoors. This one does say, and it is worth knowing what you are buying.

Ultraviolet light breaks down polymer chains. Plastic exposed to it slowly loses its flex: it hardens, discolours, and eventually splits where the stress is highest, usually the top edge or a corner. On a 25 litre pot that happens at the worst possible moment, with a full root ball inside.

UV stabilisation means additives are worked into the material that absorb that light or quench the reaction before the chain is damaged. It does not make the pot indestructible, but it considerably extends the period over which it keeps its resilience.

Where do you notice? Outdoors in full sun the difference from an unstabilised pot is clearest: that one turns brittle within two seasons. It counts indoors too, because modern grow lamps put out part of their energy at short wavelengths, and a pot standing for months directly beneath one takes a dose of it.

In practice: if this pot is going to live outdoors or has to last for years, it is the only one in the range that promises anything about it.

Twenty-five litres in the space

At 33 by 33 centimetres you fit nine on a square metre touching, or four with working room. The 35 centimetre height counts towards your lamp distance: the plant starts a good third of a metre off the floor.

The pot tapers, so the 33 centimetres is the measurement at the top and the base is narrower. Size a saucer or tray by the base rather than the rim.

Frequently asked questions

Can it stay outdoors all year? For UV exposure it is built for it. Frost is a separate question: a full wet pot that freezes will expand.

How much substrate does it take? Half a 50 litre bag per pot.

Will a plant tray fit under it? The largest square tray in this range is 29 centimetres and it is tight. A large catch tray works better.

How much water per watering? Four to five litres, spread across the whole surface.
