This base has holes, and that decides how you use it

The difference between the L and the XL in this range is not only size. The base tray of this L has two-tier drainage holes; the XL deliberately has none. That makes them two different tools.

Because this tray drains, you can use it the way you use a seed tray: fill it with medium, sow into it and water from above. Whatever is surplus runs away rather than standing in the bottom. For seedlings that matters, because a saturated layer under a just-germinated seed is exactly where damping off begins.

The flip side is that you do not simply stand it on a wooden table or a carpet. Put a saucer underneath, or use a second solid tray as a base.

The tall lid is for the period after germination

Eighteen centimetres is generous for a tray of this footprint. A seedling just clearing the medium does not need it, but the same seedling ten days later does. So the tall lid extends the period in which you can still steer the climate before you have to harden off.

The lid carries a rotating vent. Keep it shut while there are no roots, then open it gradually until the lid can come off.
