The largest unheated propagator in this range, 58 by 40,5 by 22,5 cm, with two rotating vents and a base tray without drainage holes.

No drainage holes, and that is deliberate

The solid base of this XL is sometimes read as a shortcoming. Garland build it that way because most people buying a tray of this size do not shovel medium into it, they stand smaller trays, pots or cell inserts in it. For that way of working a solid tray is what you want: it catches whatever runs out of the trays, and you can water from below by leaving a shallow layer in the base.

So it is not a seed tray but a holder. Garland state that the common cell inserts fit, including the 77-cell and 60-cell layouts. If you want a tray you sow into directly and that drains, the L in the same range is the model that does that.

What two vents let you do that one does not

The lid carries two rotating vents rather than one. Over this length that is noticeable: with two openings you can admit more air at one end than the other, which you use when one half of your tray is further along than the other. You can also simply dose more finely, because you go from shut to open in two steps.

Otherwise the same applies as to any propagator: keep it shut while there are no roots, then open gradually over about five days.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there no holes in the base?
Because this tray is meant to hold other trays and pots. The solid base catches what runs out of them and makes watering from below possible.

So can I not sow directly into it?
You can, but surplus water then stays in the base. If you want a tray that drains, look at the L in this range.

Will my cell inserts fit?
The common 77-cell and 60-cell layouts fit. If in doubt, measure your insert.

Does it have heating?
No. This is an unheated model; bottom heat comes from a separate mat.
