Powder releases slowly, and that is the reason to choose it

A gel puts its hormone onto the tissue at once. A Rhizopon powder works differently: its composition releases the active substance gradually. They call it the slow-release effect themselves, and across a fair number of crops it gives a better result than a treatment that delivers everything in one go.

Where it really matters is when your cuttings are not going straight into the medium. If they have to be transported, or go into a cold store for a while first, a powder treatment keeps working while they wait. A product that does its job in the first hour is largely spent before the cutting is anywhere.

The concentration belongs to the crop, not to your ambition

Rhizopon supply rooting powders from 0,25 to 1 percent. This is the light end of that range and is meant for soft, herbaceous material and for semi-hardwood. Stronger is not better: too high damages the tissue, too low simply gives less initiation.

Rhizopon therefore advise testing a small batch per crop before you treat a whole round. That sounds like a detour and in practice saves a failed series, because sensitivity genuinely differs between species and between cultivars.

One action that saves most of the powder

Make a hole in your medium with a thin stick first and set the cutting into it. Push the cutting straight into a plug or into soil and you scrape most of the powder off on the way down, leaving it on top of the medium instead of on the cut.

Powder or gel?
Powder if your cuttings still have to wait or travel, because it releases gradually. Gel if you are sticking them immediately and want the cut sealed.

Can I use more powder for a faster result?
No. Too much active substance damages the tissue. Tap the excess off instead.

Why do Rhizopon recommend testing?
Because sensitivity differs per crop. A small test batch stops you treating a whole round at the wrong strength.

Can I return unused powder from the dish?
Discard what you poured out. Putting powder that has touched cuttings back into the pack is how you contaminate a batch.
