The AquaKing HX-2500 moves 1000 litres per hour. On its own that figure says nothing: what matters is how many times the contents of your tank pass through it in an hour. That ratio, not the litre count, decides which pump you need.

Think in turnovers, not litres

Divide the capacity by your tank volume and you have the number of times the pump circulates your solution per hour. A thousand litres an hour in a 100 litre tank is ten turnovers. In a 250 litre tank it is four, and in a 500 litre tank two. For keeping a nutrient solution mixed and stopping anything settling out, a few turnovers an hour is ample, so this pump comfortably serves tanks up to a few hundred litres.

Why oversizing buys nothing

Circulating more than you need adds nothing and does cost electricity, and a permanently running pump sheds its power as heat into your solution. Turning a 100 litre tank over ten times an hour is not better mixing than three times an hour, only more expensive. Below 50 litres, the HX-1500 at 5 watts is the more sensible choice.

What else it will do

With 1.6 metres of head and a 14.5 millimetre outlet, this is also a usable pump for ebb and flood tables and small NFT setups. For drippers and sprinklers that depend on pressure it falls short: that calls for a high-pressure pump.

Frequently asked questions

How often should my solution be circulated? A few turnovers an hour keeps it mixed and stops anything settling. More is rarely necessary.

What tank size suits this? Comfortably up to a few hundred litres. Above that, look at the HX-4500.

Can it fill an ebb and flood table? Yes, provided the height stays within 1.6 metres and you keep the line short.

Is it quiet? Submerged you will barely hear it. Make sure it stands clear and does not buzz against the tank wall.
